Dinesh Singh Rawat's View on 16th World Meteorological Congress

Geneva (ABC Live): The World Meteorological Organization is all set to meet from 16 May to 3 June 2011for the Sixteenth World Meteorological Congress to be held at the International Conference Centre of Geneva (CICG).

The CICG is located at 15/17, rue de Varembé, close to the Place des Nations. The opening ceremony of Cg-XVI will take place at 10.00 a.m. on Monday, 16 May 2011.

It is to mention here that WMO assembles once every four years to discus following issues:

To Determine general policies for the fulfillment of the purposes of WMO;
To Consider membership of WMO;
To Establish and coordinate the activities of constituent bodies of the Organization;
To Approve long-term plans and the budget for the following financial period;
To Elect the President and Vice-Presidents of the Organization and members of the Executive Council;
To Appoint the Secretary-General.

The Congress will be opened by outgoing WMO President, Dr Alexander Bedritskiy and WMO Secretary-General, Mr Michel Jarraud. There will be a High-Level Segment attended by Heads of State/Government and Ministers, on 16 and 17 May 2011.

The Congress will consider strategic plan and budget of WMO future priorities for 2012-2015, in particular. These includes the proposed the Global Framework for Climate Services, the WMO Strategy for Capacity Development, the WMO Integrated Global Observing System, the WMO Information System, the Disaster Risk Reduction, the Aeronautical Meteorological Services.

WMO should and I hope it will draw its strategies to Reduce Meteorological Disaster Risk, as in cming years we should ready to face Meteorological Disasters, these could change the ways we live today all of sudden.
